Review: Shea Butter from Key West Health & Beauty

Published by

Every year, when it starts to get cold in autumn, both of my sons start to suffer from dry itchy skin. My skin also tends to dry, but since I used vitamin C serum from Azure Naturals, and a moisturizer twice daily, my skin looks good, but my feet and hands gets very dry. My 7-year-old son was suffering from painful chapped lips. Here is how his lips looked like 2 weeks ago…

Recently, Key West Health & Beauty sent me organic unrefined (raw) shea butter for review. It just came on time, and there were plenty of things to do with it!

Before I start telling you my story, let me introduce Key West Health & Beauty to you. Key West Health & Beauty is a company owned by a lovely couple who has over 20 years of experience in beauty spas. They also own a multi-location day spa, which helps develop their natural beauty products, and get feedback directly from their own customers.

When I received my shea butter, I opened it, and it was just as I expected. The label says “Organic Unrefined Shea Butter” and sure, it is! In my previous post about Shea Butter 101, I described how to know if your shea butter is raw or not. The jar I received contains pale yellow, almost butter color shea, with a nutty smell, as it should be. Some may not like that smell, but we are talking about “organic” “raw” product. The smell is not bad, especially when you get used to it.

The label states that it contains “Certified Organic Shea Butter“, no preservatives, or any other sort of chemicals additives.

” Organic certification verifies that your farm or handling facility located anywhere in the world complies with the USDA organic regulations and allows you to sell, label, and represent your products as organic.” [Source]

What distinguishes Key West Health & Beauty’s shea butter from other brands is that (according to their website):

  • Certified USDA organic, so you know it really is organic
  • Sourced from a local women’s co-op in Ghana to ensure fair wages & ethical treatment
  • BPA free and FDA approved container, to eliminate harmful chemicals from leeching into your shea butter
  • 100% natural with no added dyes or synthetic ingredients

My shea butter is soft; you can spread it with a butter knife. When applying it, I take some with a spoon or clean fingers, then I work it between my palms, the heat melts it and it is then ready for application on my skin (you can also rub it directly on the skin). It feels greasy at the beginning, but my skin absorbs it in few minutes. I used it to treat my dry skin on my hands, lips, and feet. I also used it for a quick relief of eczema and insect bite for my son. As I mentioned before, my other son had painful dry cracked lips; I applied some on his lips for few days.

My poor son, his lips were very dry, and it hurt him so much 🙁

After using shea butter for few days, his chapped lips became soft and there was no more redness or flaky skin.

I liked my shea for many reasons:

  • It is certified USDA organic and unrefined: as mentioned in my previous post, unrefined shea butter preserves all the moisturizing and healing properties due to being rich in vitamins A and E, whereas refined butter loses most of its benefits.
  • Itching is relieved immediately: I used it to treat my kid’s itchy skin due to insects’ bite, and it did the job perfectly.
  • Much safer for dry chapped lips: I had to convince my son that shea butter is much better for him; his only complaint was the strange smell. But he let me apply it on his lips for few days. Shea butter healed my son’s lips 🙂
  • It healed my dry cracked feet: my feet were very dry ( I was too lazy to look after my heels lately); I usually use Flexitol heel balm, which is great. However, it contains 25 ingredients, some of which I cannot even spell. One organic ingredient (in Shea butter) Vs 25 ingredients in Flexitol balm, I guess it was not hard to choose 😉

The only thing that I did not like about Key West Health & Beauty is the smell, but I am not suggesting adding fragrance, I prefer it this way; organic pure shea butter.

What I suggest is making some whipped shea butter combinations for easier application on skin and hair. Nevertheless, I made my own, learn how I made it here!

If you have dry skin or wish to protect your skin from getting dry, visit Key West Health & Beauty website or head to Amazon to buy your shea butter jar (16 oz size) ($17.95). There are also skin care and foot care for peppermint lovers. All products are backed with a 100% money-back satisfaction guarantee.

Over to you now: What kind of skin problems do you have in winter? What do you usually use? Have you ever used shea butter? Tell me about it in the comments.

*Though the brand sent me this product for review, all opinions are my own, and completely based on my own experience.

  • Great review and pix, Dima! Boy, that organic shea butter really worked. Amazing! I pinned the product to put on my wish list. Sounds like a great brand. And I don't mind the smell. However, I am curious about your upcoming tutorial on how to make whipped shea butter!!

    • Thank you, Allison!
Yes, it does! This shea butter is certified organic, so you get high quality product that you can use for nearly every skin and hair problem. I am sure you will love it, too!

  • Very nice post. Shea butter is really good for healthy and natural looking skin.

  • Thank you very much for a recipe of whipped Shea butter cream without heat.Yours worked very well for me .
I have been using She's butter & mixing it with oils for years but never whipped & I love it.
I have Rhynauld's disease badly on my feet & toes ,and little in my fingers from cold Wisconsin winters & nearly frost bitten numerous times growing up there.
If it wasn't for Shea butter & mixture I could not sleep, so I put lots if it on my toes and the chaffing pain goes away.

So Dhea butter to me is a Miracle !
I don't mind the nutty smell or the wood, like burning smell as I know the Miracles it gives my face & whole body .

    • Hi Sharon,
Sorry to hear that you suffer from Raynaud's disease.
Glad that my recipe is working for you.
