Three Effective Acne Treatments You Can Do at Home

Published by

Recently, my eleven-year-old daughter’s skin started to break out. Her cheeks are full of tiny pimples that need a good acne treatment; otherwise, those pimples could spread all over her face. Three Effective Acne Treatments You Can Do at Home

Well, she is not alone; approximately 85% of people between the ages of 12 and 24 experience at least minor acne. [Source]

I always try to avoid visiting a dermatologist because prescriptions include harsh medications that have many side effects. I also believe in a good skin care regimen for healthy skin. That is why I prefer to use at home acne treatments for curing most skin problems.

Off course, in some cases, we all should consult a doctor, but as for simple skin problems, you can cure your skin at home, with low risk treatments.

There are three main tips that you should follow for treating acne, here they are:

#1 Cleansing Your Skin

Your skin is covered with tiny pores that produce oil (sebum). If, for some reason, those pores were clogged, that will cause the follicle beneath to swell. That is why you should cleanse your skin regularly, sleeping with your makeup on, dirt, and pollution, all cause those pores to clog and eventually form pimples. Sometimes hormonal changed as that of teenagers causes pimples to form, still, a good skincare regimen could control this problem and reduce it to minimum.

Hint: mix equal parts of honey and yogurt; apply to your face, and wait about 15 minutes then rinse. Honey is a great natural cleanser and anti-bacterial properties.

When cleansing your skin, make sure that you do the following:

  • Use gentle cleanser: If your cleanser causes your skin to dry, that will force your skin to produce more oil, making the situation worse. Stay away from alkaline bar soaps, and alcohol-based products.
  • Exfoliate your skin regularly: On average, you can exfoliate once for dry or sensitive skin, and twice for normal to oily skin. You may choose over the counter exfoliators, or homemade remedies. I like using yogurt along with oatmeal and honey (click here for details), and lactic acid (like Dr Song lactic acid, reviewed here).
  • Use one product at a time.
  • Never over-wash or over-scrub your face; this may increase irritation.

#2 Using Homemade Remedies

There are plenty of homemade remedies for all skin types. You can try one of these 12 remedies to get rid of acne, or this turmeric mask . The best thing about these remedies is that they are safe, no side effects, and you can use on a daily basis. It might take a longer time for results to show, patience is the key for getting the best results.

#3 Treatments for Acne that Work

Look for treatments that contain salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide. These two ingredients have proven to work for curing acne.

There are plenty of websites where you can find useful information and reviews for acne treatments. Lately, I came across a website dedicated for acne sufferers, called FacingAcne, the #2 best acne website worldwide. At FacingAcne, you will find useful tips for face and body acne, home remedies, and reviews for the best acne treatments available in the market like Proactiv acne treatments.  I like their skin type test that helps you find the right acne-care products for your individual skin type.

I know, with the huge number of acne treatments available in the market, it is very hard to find the right one for you. Nevertheless, knowing the causes of your acne can help; things like not washing your face properly, sleeping with your makeup on, or maybe unhealthy diet can lead to breakouts. Make sure to wash your face properly, eat healthy food, and switch to a healthy lifestyle for an acne free skin.

  • Dima, thanks for suggesting some acne treatments that you can do from home. It makes sense that you would want to make sure your skin is completely cleansed so there is nothing that can clog the pores. It is also good to know that there are a number of effective treatments available. I would think that it can also be a good idea to speak with your doctor about what over-the-counter treatment options might be best for you.

  • Great share.
Acc to my personal experience Apple cider vinegar is a powerhouse when it comes to acting as an acne remedy.

Using a ratio of 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water, dip a cotton ball into vinegar and apply it directly to the blemish. Leave on for at least 10 minutes, or overnight. Reapply several times a day, washing face thoroughly after each time. Make sure to use a moisturizer afterwards as well if you feel like your skin is getting dry. After this you will really feel the differnce.

  • I appreciate your tip to use gentle cleanser in order to treat acne. My wife has found the same problems you described with using a cleanser that causes her skin to dry out and actually worsens the acne. Thanks for the tips, I've never tried exfoliating my skin regularly, I'll have to try it to see the effect it has on acne! My mom has also found that regularly treating her acne by moisturizing was also very effective.
