My New Favorites from Know Your Ingredients Whipped Shea Butter (Review)

01/06/2016 //  by Dima Al Mahsiri//  2 Comments

It was the end of a very busy day and all I needed was to relax and enjoy watching TV. However, my back was in pain, especially that I had to set for hours that day to finish some blogging assignments.

I usually take painkillers for my back pain, they are effective, though I try to avoid them as much as possible.

That day, I received a package of whipped shea butter from Know Your Ingredients, one of which has peppermint and rosemary scent. The scent was so strong and reminded me of topical ointments I usually use for such a backache.

Peppermint essential oil can “wake you up“, on the other hand, it has calming factors that can help your body relax, depending on how you use it.

So I thought, why not apply some on my back? And I did! After all, it is shea butter and essential oils, nothing harmful. And I am glad I did!

Pain disappeared a few minutes after application, and peppermint scent helped me relax 🙂

On the other hand, by adding it to your lip balm, peppermint essential oil helps wake you up in the morning. It can also refresh your breath when added to a mouthwash.

I also learned after doing some research that shea butter helps combat muscle fatigue, aches, and tension. Moreover, because Aromatherapists frequently use peppermint essential oil for its revitalizing and uplifting properties, these two make a great combination.

The company, Know Your Ingredients or KYI; is a company that not only creates whole food skin care but also is dedicated to raising consumer awareness regarding the health benefits of selecting and using skincare products that are simple, uncomplicated, and minimally processed.

KYI’s products include Argan Oil Serum with Vitamin C, Sweet Almond Softening Oil, and Whipped Shea Butter Mask.

I got the chance to try out whipped shea butter mask in refreshing Orange Mandarin (full size), and sample sizes of Chamomile Lavender, feminine Jasmine, and Peppermint Rosemary.

The first thing that I noticed is the creamy and light texture of the whipped shea butter, carefully whipped and filled in glass containers, no plastic is allowed to be used as KYI are anti-plastic and try to avoid using it whenever possible.

Why Should You Use Shea Butter?

Shea butter, and here I mean the natural unrefined shea butter, has tremendous benefits for your skin and hair.

  • It is a great natural moisturizer to your skin and hair, it provides “some” protection against harmful UV’s.

I have been using it for protecting my lips.

  • You can also use it as a “safe” lip balm, all alone or mixed with an edible essential oil like peppermint oil. I love this combination!
  • Shea butter is also a natural replacement for baby oils and diaper rash creams, just make sure to use unrefined and unscented shea butter.
  • Shea butter has anti-aging properties since it helps keep your skin moisturized and supple.

I like to use it as a night treatment when my skin is extremely dry, but I avoid the t-zone since I have         combination skin.

  • Shea butter is also used to lighten scars such as acne scars and stretch marks when used regularly. You  be patient, no overnight miracles!
  • Use it as a treatment for very dry hair by applying it to your hair, and rinsing it off after a few hours.
  • Shea butter can also cure eczema and insect bites.

Whipped shea butter is much more practical for applying to your skin and hair, you can make your own, or look for a trusted company to shop from.

Back to KYI Whipped Shea butter, I used different scents for different purposes. For me, I prefer using light scents on my face, so I used feminine Jasmine as a night treatment, and I used the Orange Mandarin, which is my favorite, along with Chamomile Lavender for my whole body; my arms, legs, elbows, and feet. All were easy to apply to my skin and leaves a pleasant smell for hours. My skin gets a bit oily afterward, so if you have work to do, you would better wear cotton gloves, or perhaps apply just a tiny amount on your hands during the day.

If you are new in using shea butter, the nutty smell may seem odd, so it would be a good choice to use scented, natural whipped shea butter. KYI Whipped Shea butter contains only a few ingredients, no additives, artificial scents, or coloring. So you can rest assured that you put on your skin ingredients that You Know will not harm your body.

Other scents available are Litsea Cubeba, Lime Basil. In addition to the unscented whipped shea butter, for those sensitive to scent. Make sure to check them all here.

All those whipped shea butters look fabulous! I’m glad that you can use peppermint oil to help your back and for energizing. Unfortunately, it is soooo drying for my skin and lips that I avoid it at all costs. But the way I use the peppermint essential oil that I have is by placing a few drops on the wall in my shower and the scent is fabulous! Essential oils in general are wonderful. I need more than I have.

    Thank you, Allison!

I like the way you use peppermint essential oil! Should do it one day.
I have the same problem with lavender essential oil, I had used a cream deodorant once, with lavender essential oil, and it caused irritation and dried my underarms skin. Since I used my fingers to apply the deodorant, my fingers also became very dry. Unfortunately, essential oils could be irritating, so they should be used with caution.
Thankfully, peppermint did not dry my skin:)
