How to Use Essential Oils for Headaches

Are you one of those who are plagued with painful headaches on a regular basis? Do you often find yourself looking for natural pain relief alternatives that can provide you relief from even the most painful headaches?

One of the best alternatives you might want to consider is essential oils. In fact, the following essential oils that I will mention later in this post will provide relief from even the most stubborn, persistent headaches. Therefore, make sure that you keep them available in your home whenever needed.

According to these studies, essential oils might improve sleep quality and relief from anxiety and depression. In addition, many people are exploring alternative options to more traditional medicine when it comes to treating different ailments, including headaches. These essential oils that I will use for today’s recipe are Marjoram, Ginger, and Peppermint essential oils.

Marjoram for Headache

Marjoram, also known as Origanum majorana, comes in oil form and is known for its natural analgesic properties. Marjoram could reduce the pain associated with a headache for many people. It is also an antispasmodic. As a result, marjoram helps relieve the tight and even sore muscles that accompany a headache, including a migraine headache.

Ginger for Headache

Ginger technically classified as Zingiber officinale. Ginger helps relieve nausea that is associated with a more severe headache. Based on this juncture in time ginger has been studied rather extensively for its ability to assist with issues in the gastrointestinal tract. Ginger also appears to have pain-relieving properties as well.

Peppermint for Headache

Peppermint is yet an essential oil that provides relief from a headache as it helps control blood flow in the body and open up the sinuses for better oxygen flow. Peppermint is also a natural anti-inflammatory. In addition, it has been widely utilized as a digestive aid for generations.

There are many ways that you can use peppermint oil for curing headache like adding a few drops in your bath, using it in an oil diffuser or by making peppermint tea.

Recipe for Headache Relief Using Marjoram, Ginger, and Peppermint Essential Oils

By using marjoram, ginger, and peppermint essential oils, you can make your own DIY simple homemade recipe to relieve a headache.

You will need:

  • 1 medium sized bowl filled about halfway with refrigerated water
  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 2 drops marjoram oil
  • 2 drops ginger oil
  • 1 drop peppermint oil
  • 1 regular washcloth

Here is how to combine these ingredients:

  1. Add each of the essential oils to the chilled water. Place the ice cubes in the bowl and stir to mix. The essential oils will float to the top, but that is to be expected and does not negatively affect the remedy.
  2. Soak a clean washcloth in the mixture. After that, place the cloth on your forehead. Take care to keep the mixture from getting into your eyes.
  3. When the cloth starts to warm up, repeat the process of dipping it into the mixture and then place it back on your forehead.
  4. In some cases, it takes about 10 minutes before you start to feel better. Of course, results do vary from one person to another.

This just one remedy of many that have been used for relieving headache in addition to other health problems. What I like about these remedies is that they are safe and with no side effects. Always remember that you test each essential oil on a small portion of your skin before using it.
