Laser Hair Removal: Results and Expectations

Published by

Years ago, I was obsessed with the idea of natural permanent hair removal. I tried out several creams and natural remedies for months, including the turmeric mask, hoping that my body hair would stop growing back.

For me, the fact that there is no permanent natural hair removal technique was hard to believe. Eventually, I had to stop when I found out that neither of these methods could completely stop body hair from re-growing.

There are several methods for permanently removing unwanted hair. One of the longest-lasting methods is laser hair removal. It has been going on since the 1990s. Since it is so popular, you might be tempted to run right out and have it done by yourself. However, before you schedule a laser treatment for hair loss, you need to understand what expectations you should have from the process, and the results you are likely to see after treatment. Here are the answers to those and other questions that you might have in mind.

Why is Laser Hair Removal Popular?

Laser hair removal is most popular because it is so convenient and often long-lasting. While you might have to shave the unwanted hair off once a week or more, lasers might get rid of that same hair. Part of the reason for that is that lasers can get to the parts of each hair underneath the skin, i.e the hair follicles.

Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for You?

Based on the fact that laser hair removal has been around for decades, you may assume that it is totally safe. You would be right in making that assumption under most circumstances. However, only laser machines that are operated by trained technicians in certified skincare clinics are carefully monitored and regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States. Therefore, you must be careful when selecting a hair removal clinic.

You should also be aware that laser hair removal is not safe for every hair color or skin type. Your clinician may recommend that you avoid treatment with laser equipment for hair loss entirely if your hair is red or gray. Similarly, if your skin is dark then your clinician might recommend against you being treated by certain kinds of laser devices. However, you may be able to have laser treatment once you identify the proper machine for your skin type.

What Are the Short-Term Laser Treatment Results?

You may have heard that lasers miraculously remove unwanted body hair on the spot. However, the reality is that the hairs are simply weakened by each successive treatment. It may take up to two weeks for you to notice any hairs falling out after you go in for a laser procedure. In most cases, you will also need several laser hair removal appointments in order to achieve lasting results.

Are Laser Hair Removal Results Guaranteed and the Same for All People?

No two people are alike.

Therefore no two people’s laser hair removal results are alike either.

A lot also depends on where the hair that is being removed is located; because the growth cycle of human hair varies based on the part of the body where the hair is found. For example, the hair under your arms takes a different period of time to grow back naturally than it takes the hair on your head.

One good example is that eyebrow hair typically takes one to two weeks to grow to its standard length. Then the hair follicle basically shuts off and becomes dormant and growth slows or stops for about 10 months.

What Long-Term Laser Treatment Expectations Should You Have?

If you decide to undergo laser hair removal, it should be with the expectation that the hair will take more time to grow back than it would if you shaved or waxed it off. You should not expect to permanently remove the hair forever, especially after only one treatment.

If you have multiple ongoing laser hair removal sessions, then some hair follicles may be damaged enough to permanently prevent re-growth, but the results will not be the same for every hair in the treatment area.

I hope this post answers all questions you have in mind about laser hair removal.

  • I didn't realize that eyebrow hair can take around one to two weeks to grow into its normal length and then growth can slow or stop for about ten months. This is fascinating to me. My sister and I have been considering getting parts of our eyebrow hair removed for a wedding coming up. I love the idea of getting the hair removed via laser. It's also nice to know that this procedure is very common and safe.

  • Hey Dima,

Nice post! - I was worried by the safety of this procedure. But you pointed out that its safe.

    Thanks for the good info.

  • However unwanted facial hair can be removed with both natural and surgical method, in fact I’ve followed both methods but I found natural method is a best option to remove facial hair. I loved these home remedies and learn much more ideas for that. TY for sharing ?

  • Sadly, laser hair removal never worked for me. I have dark skin and the only thing I got from it was itchy skin.
