7 Simple Steps to Soothe and Prevent Dry Skin

Published by

Skin dryness is one of the most common skincare problems. With the harmful rays of the sun, harsh chemicals that we use and the environmental stressors all around us, it seems like our skin was destined to get dry and damaged.

Maybe you have tried all possible solutions but to no avail. Or perhaps, you may even have undergone a dermatological procedure that cost a lot, but still, your skin went back to being dry and damaged just after a few months.

What you need to understand is that fighting off skin dryness is a multi-step process. No single solution can solve this skin problem.

Here are the steps that you Need to Take to Soothe your Dry Skin:

#1 Cleanse your Skin Right

Sometimes, the products that we use could cause our skin to dry. Because of this, you should avoid the use of harsh cleansers; because these products tend to strip away natural oils from the skin, which can aggravate your skin condition even more.

If you want to do your cleansing right, try washing your face with just plain water (no soaps or cleansers). Opt for warm water. Avoid hot water, as the heat tends to make the skin a lot drier. Just wet a washcloth with warm water then gently wipe it all over your face. Pat your skin dry with a soft cotton towel afterward.

#2 Cleanse your Skin Again (this time with oil)

If you are wearing makeup, washing your skin with water alone won’t do the job, it would then be better to use the oil cleansing method. This method is designed to get rid of dirt, dust, and makeup residues on your face without making the skin dry.

Instead of going for commercially available oil cleansers, you can try making your own. If you have dry skin, you can go for a mixture of almond oil, jojoba oil, and argan oil. Start by splashing water on your face then proceed on applying the oil blend all over your face using your fingertips. Afterward, gently remove the oil using a washcloth that has been wet with warm water.

#3 Exfoliate

Many people think that exfoliation can get to make the skin dry. It may if you will over-exfoliate. But when done right, exfoliation can remove the dead and dry layer of skin which can pave the way for a healthier layer of skin underneath.

It would be best if you would use a natural scrub like a blend of honey and sugar or oatmeal. But if the buildup of dead skin is too much to handle, you may go for an exfoliating product that contains a small amount of glycolic acid. Aside from removing dead skin cells, these acids can also help in brightening the dull skin.

#4 Moisturize Daily

We all know that the simplest way to combat skin dryness is to moisturize twice a day, every day. Always apply a moisturizer while your skin is damp so it can seal the moisture in.

When choosing a moisturizer, avoid the products that contain alcohol, soaps or any other ingredients that are too harsh and may cause skin dryness like fragrances. You can use a lightweight moisturizer in the morning so your skin won’t feel heavy or greasy. At night, you can opt for a more heavyweight moisturizer or night cream. You can also go for pure coconut oil, shea butter, or argon oil during those days when your skin is extra dry.

#5 Perform a Deep Moisturizing Treatment 2-3 Times a Week

Aside from your daily moisturizing regimen, you should also make it a point to perform a deep moisturizing treatment at least twice or thrice a day. Apple cider vinegar on dry skin is one of the most effective treatments that you can try.

To take advantage of the moisturizing benefits of this type of vinegar, make an apple cider vinegar bath by adding one cup of apple cider vinegar to your bath.

You can also try mixing one teaspoon of vinegar with a cup of water. Dip a cotton ball in it then apply the solution to the dry skin.

#6 Hydrate your Skin from the Inside Out

Aside from cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing your face, you can effectively moisturize your skin is by hydrating it from deep within.

You can do this by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. It is also advisable to check TDS in water to make sure that no contaminants are being consumed by the body.

In addition to that, you may also want to incorporate vegetables and fruits into your daily diet. To promote the health of skin cells, consume foods that are rich in fatty acids. Such food items include avocado, nuts, fish and fish oils.

#7 Prevent Dry Skin in the Future

Contrary to popular belief, you can prevent dry skin. When you finally bring back the hydration to your skin, the next thing that you should do is to maintain it. There are plenty of ways on how you can do this. These are as follows:

  • Use a humidifier in your room or home.
  • Stop smoking and drinking as the substances in cigarettes and alcohol can cause excessive dryness on the skin.
  • Protect your skin from the sun by applying sunscreen on a regular basis.
  • You can also protect your skin by wearing a hat or covering your skin with a scarf when you are outside.
  • Avoid products that contain alcohol, soaps, fragrances, or surfactants.

Keep in mind that treating and preventing dry skin is a continuous process. If you wish to maintain healthy and vibrant skin (and prevent signs of aging from appearing), the best thing that you can do is to perform the steps that we have mentioned.
