Skincare Trends Inspired by the 1920s that We Still Love

04/07/2019 //  by Dima Al Mahsiri//  Leave a Comment

With all the beauty products and alluring videos out there, it must be challenging to understand skincare. When it comes to beauty, we all know that old is gold and, in this article, we are going to share with you some skincare and makeup trends from the 1920s era which was all about flapper hairstyles, pouty lips, and sparkling skin.

Skincare is something we all seem to follow almost every day. Be it right or wrong; we love to slather several products on our face.

No one stays young forever. Every year we seem to grow a little older and wiser. In our twenties, we are young, fresh, and vibrant while when we enter thirty, our skin starts to show signs of aging and reminds us that we are no longer young.

No matter whatever our age is, an effective skin care regimen is the base of taking care of ourselves. There is always time to restore and reverse the damages, and we shall see how.

Skincare and beauty in the 1920s used a lot of new and comparatively nicer products. Women at that time were pretty conscious when it came to taking care of themselves and their skin.

So, let us look at some of the things they did when it comes to skincare and beauty.

The Ritual of Beauty

When it comes to outer beauty women at that time were aware of the fact that whatever is reflected outside is all connected to the inside. They started to realize that a healthy body not only made them look younger but also brightened and enhanced their complexion.

Therefore, in order to achieve a healthy body, they decided to focus on proper diet and exercise in order to maintain that hourglass figure for as long as possible.

Another latest fashion of that time was an obsession over complexion. Every woman was conscious of their quality sleep, the availability of water and also the consumption of fresh air. They knew that putting healthy both on the inside and outside helped them achieve that pristine and healthy-looking skin.

The Importance of Proper Skin Care

The woman at this time realized the importance of skincare, and they took a lot of time to gain perfection in their skin business. Not only did they maintain a proper diet and quality sleep, but they also believed that drinking 5-7 glasses per day enhanced their complexion and left their skin glowing and plump. This is something that you hear about a lot even today and it is something still recommended by the beauty influencers today.

They also invested in quality makeup and skincare products and avoided whatever crossed their way. On my blog, The Beautyholic, I have emphasized in my articles about how drinking enough water keeps us hydrated from inside, therefore keeping the skin’s moisture level balanced.

The Invention of Cold Cream

As skincare was progressing during this time, the idea of cold cream was relatively new. Women started to realise that washing their face with regular soap not only made their skin dry but also caused irritation and flakiness. This is when the realisation dawned on them that their facial skin is very different than the rest of their body and that they need to treat it with special care.

They switched their regular soap with cold cream and used it as a makeup remover to get rid of all the makeup and also cleanse the face to take off any dirt and grime. They also used this cream before bed which enabled them to achieve proper hydration and long-lasting lustre.

Vanishing Cream

This was a very popular invention of the 1920s. The Vanishing cream was exactly what we know today as a foundation or BB cream. This was generally used before a setting powder because the women at that time realized that the usage of this product not only enabled them to achieve an even tone but also helped their powder to stick well on their face.

They loved how the Vanishing Cream gave an illusion of a natural skin but only better. The formula of the Vanishing Cream was lighter and also had less oil as compared to the Cold Cream. Women with oily Skin could easily use this product as it reduced shine and provided that long-lasting mattifying effect. This was indeed the best innovation of the 1920s.

Makeup Trends from the 1920s

the Great Gatsby looks

Now talking about makeup, the idea of an emphasized face was a very new concept to the ladies of 1920s. We all know that the Great Gatsby looks were loading at this time. Everything about women of this time was fashionable, chic and urbane. It was a new revolution in terms of fashion and everyone seemed to like it. Let us now see some makeup trends of this time.

Hair

Hair was a very important aspect of women in the 1920s. If you have seen The Great Gatsby then you must have noticed that the women sported a bold and confident hairstyle. It usually consisted of Bob cuts which were also known as flapper hairstyles. This hairstyle completely rocked with a classic edge to it.

Eyes

There were not a variety of products available for the eyes. So the women would mix coal with petroleum jelly to coat their lashes and enhance the beauty of their eyes. They applied this with a thin brush and this is when the sultry smoky eyes originated.

Lips

Lips were the most iconic segment of the 1920s. The women during this time believed in exaggerated lips with a rich dark color placing special emphasis on the cupid’s now. They generally went for alluring, sensuous and pouty lips.

That was all about the skincare and makeup trends of the 1920s. Overall, the ladies from that classical era liked to maintain a rich and classy look and were experimental in trying out new products. They gave serious fashion goals to ladies of all ages and eras. This is when most of the looks we see today were created.
