Types of Acne, Causes, and Treatment (Infographic)

04/03/2020 //  by Dima Al Mahsiri//  1 Comment

Have you ever experienced waking up from a beauty rest, and then as you get started with your skincare routine to kick off the day, you see a red spot on your face in the mirror. It’s distracting and hurts to touch. You have an angry zit.

As usual, you do your best to cover it up with makeup to make it less noticeable within the day. Then, you get home and put on some spot treatment before heading to bed, hoping it’s gone tomorrow. However, sometimes it just won’t budge.

What is acne?

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions that affect many people. In the U.S. alone, statistics show that roughly 50 million Americans have acne. This skin condition is identified by red bumps on the concerned area of the face, sometimes even in different parts of the body, as the hair follicles get clogged with sebum and dead skin cells.

Acne can be noninflammatory or inflammatory. Below are the subtypes of acne under the two categories:

  • Blackheads – Open comedones; top of the pore stays open
  • Whiteheads – Closed comedones protruding from the skin; top of the pore closes up
  • Papules – Bright red or pink bumps that are tender to the touch
  • Pustules – often filled with pus and have yellow or whiteheads on top of a red bump
  • Nodules – Hard pimples that are deep underneath the skin
  • Cysts – The largest form of acne that looks like red or white bumps, where the clog is further below the skin than nodules; painful to the touch.

Take note that it’s possible to get multiple types of acne at once. Knowing which type you have is vital to help you determine the right treatment and to turn your beauty routine into an acne-friendly one.

What you can do to get rid of acne?

There’s no overnight and permanent solution to curing acne. But, it’s possible to slow down the production of oil and reduce the development of acne.

  • Lifestyle change

The most useful but arguably hardest lifestyle change you need to make is never to touch, pick, or pop your pimples to avoid irritation and inflammation. Do also drink plenty of water a day, sleep eight hours, and eat healthy meals.

  • Regular facials

One way to clean your skin, as well as take out comedones and pop pimples, is by regularly visiting an esthetician. They are experts who perform cosmetic skin treatments like facials, as well as extractions using sterilized tools to ensure safety.

  • Cleansing and skincare

Make sure to wash the dirt or makeup off your face every day by using mild cleansers. If you are prescribed with topical medications by your dermatologist, make sure to apply them as instructed.

  • Reduce the shine

While you can’t stop your oil glands from producing oil, you can get rid of the shine on the surface by using a gentle astringent or toner. You can also use products containing alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA) or glycolic acid to exfoliate the top layer of the skin.

If you’re reading this, then chances are you have an existing battle with acne, or you are on the lookout as a value-oriented shopper on skincare products that work.
